Everyone is asking…

WHAT IS PITCH & PUTT?

Imagine golf without the pomp, the circumstance, and the occasional fashion faux pas.

Welcome to the delightful world of Pitch & Putt—a game where the holes are short, the laughs are long, and the dress code is as relaxed as your favorite Sunday morning.

A Brief History: From Sheep to Short Swings

Our story begins in the 1930s in County Cork, Ireland. Legend has it that locals, perhaps inspired by shepherds swinging sticks at stones (or maybe just looking for a good time), decided to create a miniature version of golf. This pastime focused on the finesse of pitching and putting, eliminating the need for powerful drives. The idea caught on, and by 1944, the Irish Amateur Pitch and Putt Union was established to formalize the sport.

In 1947, a private concessionaire recognized the potential for a beginner-friendly golf experience within Green Lake Park. They developed our nine-hole, par-three course exclusively for pitching and putting. To complement the course, a modest wood-frame clubhouse was constructed between 1948 and 1949. This building, characterized by its flat roof and rectangular 16 by 24-foot plan, provided a welcoming space for golfers to gather. The clubhouse's design featured wide cedar siding and Roman brick accents, embodying the architectural sensibilities of the era. That very building is our beloved Pro Shop.

The Game: Golf's Laid-Back Cousin

Pitch & Putt is the antithesis of traditional golf's sometimes stuffy reputation. Courses typically feature holes no longer than 90 meters (about 100 yards), making them perfect for beginners, families, or anyone looking to hone their short game. Armed with just a couple of clubs—a wedge and a putter—you can navigate a course in about an hour, leaving plenty of time for other adventures.

One of the most charming aspects of Pitch & Putt is its inclusivity. There's no need to don plaid pants or collared shirts; come as you are and enjoy the game. It's common to see players in casual attire, from jeans to t-shirts, all united by the simple joy of the sport.

Fun for All Ages: From Tots to Grandparents

Whether you're five or ninety-five, Pitch & Putt offers a delightful experience. The short holes and relaxed pace make it accessible for young children, while the emphasis on skill over strength ensures that seniors can compete (and often win) against younger players. It's not uncommon to see three generations sharing laughs and lighthearted competition on the same course.

Pitch & Putt in the USA: A Hidden Gem

While wildly popular in Europe, Pitch & Putt courses are a bit of a rarity in the United States. However, those in the know cherish these hidden gems. While exact numbers are hard to pin down, standalone Pitch & Putt courses in the U.S. are few and far between. This scarcity makes discovering one all the more special—a testament to the sport's niche yet devoted following.

Preserving a Seattle Tradition

Nestled in Seattle's Green Lake Park, the Green Lake Pitch & Putt has been a cherished community fixture for over seven decades. Its history reflects the city's evolving recreational landscape and the enduring appeal of accessible golf.

As urban development pressures mount, the future of municipal golf courses often comes into question. However, the Green Lake Pitch & Putt's small footprint and dedicated patronage have helped preserve its place in the community. Its continued operation serves as a testament to Seattle's commitment to maintaining accessible recreational spaces amidst a rapidly changing urban landscape.

Today, the Green Lake Pitch & Putt stands as a symbol of Seattle's recreational heritage, offering a relaxed and inclusive environment where individuals of all ages can enjoy the simple pleasures of the game.
